Swiss 20 Francs is the only Swiss gold coins issued in large quantities and this is one of the world’s classic gold coins.
There are two different types of Swiss 20 franc coins but they both have the same specifications :
Face value : 20 Francs
Diameter : 21.2 mm
Weight : 6.4516 gr
Fineness of gold : .900
Fine gold weight in troy ounces : 0.1867
20 Francs type Helvetia
The obverse features a bust of Liberty, with a coronet with the word “Libertas”. “Confederation Helvetica” appears on each side. On the reverse, we can see a star above the Swiss cross on a simple shield within a wreath. The denomination 20 FR is at either side of the shield, with the date below.
The Swiss 20 Francs Gold coin was issued from 1886 to 1896 in Bern.
20 Francs type Vreneli
The obverse features a bust of a Vreneli with braided hair, wearing a garland of flowers, with Swiss Alps in background. Above her head are the words “Helvetia”. The reverse features a swiss cross on a more ornate shield superimposed on an oak branch tied with ribbons. The denomination (20 FR) and the date also appears on this side.
The Swiss 20 Francs Gold coin was minted in Bern from 1897 to 1935, then again in 1947 and 1949.
